Title: Broken Pottery - drabble #2
Author: themus_revenge
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: No, I don't own them and in my wildest dreams I could make money from this.
Warnings: Little bit of violence, nothing terrible.
As soon as the plate leaves his hand he knows he has made a mistake.
It hits the wall with too much force, splintering into a thousand jagged pieces which fly across the room.
And that kid, that delinquent is staring at him now – half in fear, half in confusion – as if he never expected physical violence from Caleb Nichol of all people. There is blood trickling down the boy's elbow and the side of his face, but he hasn't moved since Caleb started shouting.
It was a mistake. He just ruined a perfectly good bone china dinner set.
Julie is going to be upset.
“I want you to stay away from my family.” He points a finger for good measure and the boy swallows thickly, backing up a step into the wall.
There's really nowhere else for him to go.
Caleb doesn't know what possessed him to come here again, still begging like a dog to be allowed Lindsay's company.
As if he would ever let this little con artist worm his way into another daughter's life.
He sweeps another plate onto the floor – watches the boy watching him as it flips across the room and hits the tile. The boy flinches hard at the noise, shoulders hunching inwards. He's beginning to sweat now, little beads at the top of his forehead.
Caleb wonders what makes him so afraid this time. It's not as if he hasn't yelled at the boy before. It's not as if the boy can't take a few punches – he's proven that in his time here.
Maybe it's because he's Kirsten's father. Maybe because they're alone. Maybe he's afraid that he'll finally have to give up on his con.
Caleb smirks, sends another plate soaring.
He's already ruined the set – he might as well finish making his point.
“You know I have a lot of friends, boy. Many people who would do anything I ask just because I asked it.” He pauses before repeating, “anything I ask.”
The boy may be uneducated but apparently he's smart, because it's only moments before his eyes widen in shock and he swallows again, blinking.
“Then why haven't you asked already?” he says.
Caleb's impressed he can get the words out, actually, and he raises his eyebrows in surprise. He's had grown men cowering and pleading with threats like that before. “I don't wish to alienate my daughter that badly. Yet.”
The boy eyes him warily.
Caleb huffs, bored of the boy's fear. “Clean up this mess and get out. I have more important things to deal with than delinquent brats.”
And, for once, the boy does what he's told.

Poor Woobie.:( When will fucking Caleb Nichol lay off Ryan for good and all.
What a joy power must be if it takes brow beating a little little bleeding, selfless and defenceless boy to get it.
Calebs a Swine!. I don't know how Kirsten has grown up to be as grounded as she is.

I've always been fascinated with the vastly conflicting dichotomy between some of the terms Caleb used/uses to refer to or address Ryan compared to the manner in which he does so and how he actually treats him. Caleb might call him "boy" or "that boy" or even "the inland street thug" or "that little delinquent" in passing, to remind Ryan- and himself- of the pronounced gap in their ages. It's one more "advantage," apparently, for Caleb. However, for all that Caleb appears/appeared to look down upon and scorn Ryan as unworthy white trash, he also behaves/behaved as if Ryan were an adversary- even a worthy one- and an adult one at that.
This "lovely" little exchange emphasizes all the aspects of that dynamic. There's no indication from Caleb that this is a sixteen-year-old boy in his presence. It again raises the question of just what motivates Caleb and what he fears in and from Ryan. He certainly won't admit what the others all realize at different times to various extents, and that is that Ryan makes them assess themselves.
You show us Caleb putting on a show, covering his own weakness and embarrassment and masquerading as someone marking territory, dictating terms, and displaying power instead. And Caleb can't possibly know that Ryan sees him as one in a long line of self-inflated bullies. While Caleb likes to believe that his show is having the desired effect, he can't know what memories he is triggering for Ryan or what conditioned responses Ryan is trying to keep under wraps.
These two characters have so much potential to explore. Any sort of contact or exchange between them is just loaded with potential both in terms of their own dynamic, and for the ripple effect. This "drabble" has real legs if you ever want to let it run loose on its own. You write these two quite well. If you haven't, you should read chaseii's fic that has their paths crossing.
Thanks for this!
